Servers

A server computer is a high-performance computer designed to handle, store and manage network data, devices and systems. Servers are the engines that drive businesses by providing network devices and systems with adequate resources. Servers are essential to organizations because they provide scalability, efficiency and business continuity. Servers can perform the same tasks that a regular desktop computer can with a few additions. On the other hand, desktop computers can execute server processes but at a much lower performance level.

Servers manage network resources. For example, a user can set up a server to control network access, send/receive e-mail, manage print jobs, or host a website. They are also adept at performing intensive calculations. Some servers are dedicated to a specific task or one site, often called dedicated servers. However, many servers today are shared servers that take on the responsibility of email, DNS, FTP, and multiple websites in the case of a web server

Since the servers are usually used to provide services that are required all the time, most servers are never turned off. As a result, when servers fail, they can cause network users and the company many problems. To alleviate these problems, servers are usually configured to be fault tolerant

Web Server – A web server is software that provides HTML pages or files to clients. Web browsers act as clients for Web servers. All web pages are provided by web servers

Mail Server – An email server is a program that receives incoming mail from local users and remote senders, and forwards outgoing mail for delivery

Application Server – An application server is computer software that runs on a server in a distributed network and handles the business logic of an application

Virtual Server – A virtual server is a program running on a shared server that has been configured to appear to each user as if they have full control over their private server

Game Server – Almost all games use servers to transmit and receive information to and from their clients to play the most popular online PC games and the smallest smartphone games

Proxy server – Proxy servers, also known as gateways, are intermediary software that connect one endpoint device, such as a computer, to another server from which a user or client requests service

File Server – Whenever data is saved and transmitted, a server is called into action. The file server is a computer that is responsible for the central storage and management of data so that other computers on the same network can access them

Print Server –Print servers allow users to connect to one or more printers connected to the network. Users send print jobs to the print server, which acts as a queue for these jobs

Database Server – A database server is responsible for hosting databases. Database queries are performed by client applications to access data or store new data in a server database
